Here’s a question that comes up a lot: Is my jewelry made of pure silver?
Well, get ready: this article might shatter what is perhaps the biggest myth in the jewelry world.
Another way to consider the question is whether such a thing as pure silver jewelry even exists.
The short answer is no. There is no such thing as pure silver jewelry. That’s because pure silver or 100% silver is so soft that it’s impossible to make jewelry with it.
So what kind of silver is jewelry made from?
Combining pure silver with another metal transforms it into a new and hard material, which is then suitable for jewelry design. This new material is called 925 sterling silver, and is composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other types of metal (usually copper).
Does silver jewelry turn black?
Yes. The kind of silver that doesn’t ever become black is usually made from something different, known stainless steel, and it is decidedly (get ready!...) not silver. Real silver jewelry blackens over time because of what’s known as the “oxidation” process involving contact with air. But it also depends on how the jewelry is stored, and the level of acidity of our body. The good news is that there’s a really simple way to clean it!
So… how do you clean silver jewelry?

For you silver jewelry addicts, we recommend buying a special polishing fluid. This is a liquid in which you dip the jewelry for half a minute then rinse with water and finally, dry with a paper towel. Polishing liquid is great because it cleans those nooks and crannies cloth alone cannot reach. We recommended investing in polish if you have necklaces, or just loving wearing lots of silver jewelry.
We don’t recommend storing silver jewelry with jewelry made of other metals (especially not gold-filled), as it may accelerate the blackening process. Best to keep it separate in the packing box, or in another dry and closed place.
